Honest thoughts during Yoga

Before you decide to go to a Yoga session, the excitement of joining a session is obviously evident, but it’s also not hard for your mind to be wandering around thoughts like:

  • “Ahh, Yoga, can’t wait to work on my flexibility…what if I practice at home though?”
  • “Should I go to the gym or do yoga? Or both?” and
  • “I need new yoga pants. You can’t go to a Yoga class without a cute pair of pants. Should I buy the mat too?”

Of course, the plethora of thoughts is never-ending, but these are the first thoughts that ran through my mind when I first started practicing. My relationship with Yoga is “on and off.” We both had our good days and bad days. I started practicing three years ago in my room, just because I felt like I needed to cope with stress, and honestly because I always found Yoga poses that people post through the Internet really cool and challenging. So I said to myself, challenge accepted. However, I used to believe that these poses were not that difficult and I could master them quickly. WRONG! After some serious failed attempts at doing the crow pose and a headstand, I decided to join a professional Yoga class. Despite feeling happy that my practicing could now become more effective (and safe), I was happy our little lively city was finally offering new healthy stuff like Yoga.

This summer I decided to join N’yoga classes  with the amazing Annea every Tuesday and Thursday, where the sessions start with 5-10 minutes of meditation, continue with 40-45 minutes of asana and end with 5 minutes of meditation. Here’s a recap of what usually goes through my mind during Yoga:Blog

An honest conversation with my mind during a Yoga session:

We begin with meditation in Shavasana:

My mind: “Ok, this is not hard. Now focus. Try not to think anything. But if you’re trying not to think, are you still thinking? Focus, focus!” #mindf*ck

Challenging poses start:

My mind: “High plank? That’s easy. But what, I am supposed to connect this with my breathing and mind? Inner self, what? Focus. Release your breath in downward-dog, inhale in cobra.”

More challenging poses start:

My mind: “Why did I come? Am I sweating too much? Am I doing this correctly. Why do we have to hold this pose for so loooooong.”

Poses continue:

My mind: “I think I’m getting the hang of this. Wait…nope.”

We end in meditation:

My mind: “I will never ever miss a yoga sequence again. I am breathing differently. Calmness. Clarity. I feel so flexible and zen.”

Finally, I’d encourage all of you to join a yoga class or at least start practicing Yoga. Please remember, Yoga is not for women only:)

Albanian Version:

“Ah, Yoga, menzi po pres me u ni ma fleksibile…Qka nëse sot ushtroj n’shpi?”,

“A me shku ma mirë në gym apo yoga sot? Apo dyjat?” edhe

“A duhna me ble yoga pants? Po duhet patjeter. A jo? A duhet me pasë edhe shtrojcën?”

Eksperienca ime tri vjeçare me Yoga ka qenë “on and off.”
